e.r. visit

Sorry I don't have long to post today. Last night we had an accident at our house. Makena was playing around on the baby gate and fell. Her finger was at a 90 degree angle and ripped open. I'll save you the gory details. We rushed her to the ER. She broke her left index finger in two places, near the tip. She also had to get five stitches on that little bitty finger to put it all back together again. She was a trooper though and insisted on watching the doctor the entire time.

We are off to the plastic surgeon this morning. I'll keep you posted as I know more.

Update:

Thank you for all of your well wishes. She is doing much better today. Last night was HORRIBLE. I just couldn't stop the bleeding, trying to rush her to the ER, got pulled over by the state trooper for speeding (with a lecture).... Ugh. I almost fainted a few times in the ER. I just couldn't stop crying and couldn't keep myself together. Then I felt like a failure for being that type of mom. I can usually handle a lot but the thought of her losing a finger and it mutilated just put me over the edge.

Went to the plastic surgeon this morning. He removed the splint and replaced it with a large band aid. A band aid? Can't we put her in a full cast for a while? Just to make me feel better? He told me to let her use it as much as she wants to. She will let us know if she's in pain. He said she'll be ripping open her presents next week.

The break occurred on the growth plate, on the joint below the finger tip. Basically the growth plate was moved to the outside of her finger. He consulted a hand surgeon and they both think it will just fix itself. Just that kids are resilient while adults will walk around for a month wearing a splint. We go back in next week for more x-rays. Today she's in great spirits, running, climbing, jumping as I cringe my teeth. I just keep telling her 'not today Makena, just not today.' It's got to be the codeine.

AAAGGHH! ER visits are no fun. It's a lot of stress and anxiety to be a mama waiting in the emergency room (and dads, too.) The break sounds horrible. I'm with you - a band-aid!? Are you kidding me? Kids are resilient, that's for sure. Hang in there!

We have had two trips to the ER and one of them was this summer with stitches in Cole's forehead. Stitches are definitely faint worthy!

You guys have been such troopers! I'm totally with you -- a full on body cast would be good! (Oh, and you're a GREAT mom, and it would have been weird if you were totally calm with her poor finger being bunged up!)

Whew! What a relief! Got the phone call to go into "prayer mode" while you two were speeding to the hospital.

Thanks be to God for a good ending to a very difficult experience....

Having raised 2 sons to adulthood, I am amazed that they actually made it given how many scrapes they got themselves into: including various clunks on the noggin, broken bones, skateboard accidents, and worst of all and also unbeknownst to me at the time (I would have killed them myself if I had known about it!) playing down in our neighborhood's underground water drainage pipes! I cringe everytime I think about the Texas flash floods those pipes were supposed to help control!

Being a good mama takes real courage, Jade! Hang in there, you're doing a great job.
